On Kamis, 9 April 2024, Liverpool lost to PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) 0‑2 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter‑final. The match ended at 02:00 WIB and the home side scored through Doué and Kvaratskhelia.
Despite being on the bench, Mohamed Salah was not used by manager Arne Slot. Slot had asked Salah to warm up, but the player never entered the field. After the game, Salah walked off the pitch, passing the studio of TNT Sports where host Laura Woods and former Liverpool stars Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman were present.
He approached the trio with a smile, then gave a clear signal that he did not wish to be interviewed. Steve McManaman replied, "Jangan khawatir, jangan khawatir," acknowledging Salah’s request. Salah returned the gesture, saluted the legends, and left the scene.
Earlier this year, Salah had sparked controversy when he was interviewed and described feeling “thrown into the back of a bus” by the club. He was also listed as a substitute then. Steven Gerrard said, "Dia pasti sedih dan frustrasi," adding that Salah still respected the team by warming up and participating in other sessions.
Both legends agreed that Salah could be a useful option for the second leg. The decision, however, remains with Arne Slot. In the first leg, Liverpool finished without any shots on target.
With the aggregate score now 2‑0 in favour of PSG, the Reds will need to regroup quickly. The upcoming match will test whether the tactical changes and player availability can shift the momentum in Liverpool’s favour.
