On 18 Juni 2026, after closing at 6.220, the Indonesia Stock Index (IHSG) opened lower. At 09.00 WIB, it opened at 6.159. The index fell 0,99 % during trading.
The decline is linked to expectations of an upcoming MSCI market review. The review is scheduled for 19 Juni 2026 (Global Market Accessibility Review) and 23 Juni 2026 (Market Classification). Analysts think the announcement could trigger a clean selling wave from foreign investors.
Net foreign selling has already reached US$ 13 miliar. Meanwhile, RTI Business reports that foreign investors continue to sell even as the IHSG rises sharply early in the week.
Hasan Fawzi, Chief Executive of OJK's Innovation Technology Oversight, said the selling pressure likely comes from passive funds that track MSCI constituents. He added, "Mungkin yang dimaksud yang passive fund ya, yang selama ini mengacu kepada MSCI,".
The market reaction shows that foreign investors are sensitive to changes in MSCI index composition. The upcoming review may alter the index's constituents, prompting funds to adjust holdings.
The 0,99 % drop and the 6.159 opening level reflect the market's caution as the review dates approach. Investors may reassess positions ahead of the announcements.
The net foreign sell of US$ 13 miliar indicates a significant outflow, while the continued selling by foreign investors during a rising market suggests a cautious stance.
In summary, the IHSG's recent weakness coincides with expectations of MSCI's forthcoming review, leading to substantial foreign selling. The market remains attentive to the upcoming announcements on 19 Juni and 23 Juni, which could shape investor behavior.
