Ramadan Ganda 2030: Dua Kali Puasa di Satu Tahun Indonesia

On 2030, Muslims will experience a rare calendar event: two Ramadans in one Gregorian year, but only one Idulfitri.

Thomas Djamaluddin, a researcher at the National Space Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), explained that the phenomenon is caused by the difference between the Hijri and Gregorian calendars. The Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days, whereas the Gregorian year has 365 or 366 days. This means the Hijri calendar moves ahead roughly 10–11 days each year, sometimes allowing Ramadan to appear twice in the same Gregorian year.

Estimated dates for 2030:

  • Ramadan: 5–6 Januari 2030
  • Idulfitri: 4 Februari 2030
  • Ramadan: 26 Desember 2030
  • Idulfitri: 24–25 Januari 2031

When Ramadan falls at the beginning of January, the lunar cycle causes it to appear again at the end of December in the same year. This pattern repeats in a regular cycle, so the 2030 case is not a one‑off event but a predictable occurrence.

The dual Ramadan gives Muslims the opportunity to observe fasting twice within a relatively short span. However, Idulfitri remains a single celebration in 2030, with the second Idulfitri—linked to the second Ramadan—scheduled for early 2031. The event is noteworthy both astronomically and spiritually, highlighting the interplay between lunar and solar calendars.

Summary: In 2030, Muslims will observe Ramadan twice—once in early January and again in late December—while celebrating Idulfitri only once in February, with the second Idulfitri following in January 2031. This occurs because the Hijri calendar is shorter than the Gregorian, causing the lunar months to shift forward each year.
